Kamal ka phool hamari bhool: Rajputs rally against BJP in Rajasthan

Vasundhara Raje

Nagaur district in Rajasthan, which is around 200 kms from the state capital of Jaipur, was the epicentre of Rajput protests last year as the district had flared up over the alleged fake encounter of Anandpal Singh, a history-sheeter with several cases of murder, dacoity and kidnapping against him.

Rajput community members had alleged that Anandpal Singh was killed in a fake encounter despite his willingness to surrender.

This election year, members of the Ravana Rajput community, of which Anandpal Singh was a part of, and the Rajput community have come together in their fight against the Vasundhara Raje-led Government in Rajasthan with the sole purpose of defeating the BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections.

In Nagaur’s Ladnun, where Anandpal hails from, anger against the BJP has surged over time.

“We are together in our fight against the BJP. Whether it is the Ravana Rajputs or the Rajputs, we are working together towards defeating the BJP in the upcoming elections in Rajasthan,” a member of the Ravana Rajput community told India Today.

“We have realised the BJP has been working against the Rajput community. There have been several issues including the encounter of Anandpal Singh, the Chatur Singh encounter and the Padmaavat issue which has led to bad blood between the BJP and Rajputs. We have realised that kamal ka phool is hamari bhool,” another Ravana Rajput member said.

Nagaur district has a total of 10 assembly seats out of which Rajputs are considered to hold sway over at least seven seats. Family members of Anandpal Singh, including his mother and daughter, have been travelling to different parts to rally against the BJP in a bid to oust the party from power. They have been raising the Anandpal Singh encounter and other issues regarding the community.

“Thirty six communities in Rajasthan are working together to defeat the BJP. My father was killed in a fake encounter. There have been several issues over which these different communities in Rajasthan have been working to defeat the BJP. The response was good where ever we went to hold rallies and campaign against the BJP,” Anandpal Singh’s daughter Yogita said.

“My son was killed in a fake encounter. I have been protesting, fighting, campaigning against the BJP to ensure justice. We have made ‘Kamal ka phool hamari bhool’ a part of our campaign,” Nirmal Kanwar, Anandpal Singh’s mother, told India Today.

Even as the encounter of Anandpal Singh remains the rallying point for the protesting members of the Rajput community, it is not the only issue over which the BJP has been targeted by Rajputs and Ravana Rajputs.

Rajputs, considered an influential section in Rajasthan, comprise around 8 to 10 per cent of the state’s population. Anger within the community seems to have spread across the state over the latter half of Vasundhara Raje’s tenure.

Several of its members, who claimed to be BJP loyalists, have accused the party and Vasundhara Raje in particular of rubbing the community the wrong way.

Apart from the Anandpal Singh encounter, the community has been at loggerheads with the BJP over the manner in which the BJP state president was handpicked by denying the opportunity to a Rajput.

Apart from this, the community felt insulted when Jaswant Singh Jasol, a former BJP stalwart, was denied a ticket from Jaisalmer Barmer constituency for the last Lok Sabha elections, allegedly at the behest of Vasundhara Raje.

“There is no infighting within the BJP. The Rajputs are together and supporting the party. Earlier, there were some people who had filed their nomination but some of them have already withdrawn it,” Raghuraj Singh, BJP candidate from Ladnun, said.

The BJP has been trying to prevent the prevailing mood in the Rajput community from boiling over in the poll-bound state. In a bid to quell the anger within the Rajput community, the party has given tickets to 28 Rajput candidates, substantially more than the 13 tickets given to Rajput candidates by the Congress for the upcoming elections in the state.

However, whether the ruling party will be able to tide over the wave of seething anger prevailing within the community is something only results can tell.

This Is How Long It Actually Takes For A Supplement To Kick in

Ever reached for a multivitamin at the first sign of a sniffle, in the desperate hope you can ward off the dreaded flu before the full-blown symptoms hit? Yup, we’ve all been there and we know what it feels like to want results fast.

That’s why we hit up Jessica Sepel, nutritionist and founder of JSHealth Vitamins, for her expert intel as to how long it actually takes for supplements to take effect.

How long does it usually take to notice a difference after taking a supplement?

It really depends on what’s in the supplement. If you’re lacking in minerals and nutrients, it can take a few days for supplements to kick in. From personal and clinical experience, iodine can work within days. It’s a great source of energy production because of its ability to enhance the thyroid and metabolism, which drives energy. Many people are so iodine deficient that when they start supplementing it they notice a difference in energy and mental clarity within a few days. Generally speaking, it takes around three to six weeks for noticeable changes.

Will the severity of your deficiency determine how quickly you start to feel better?

Yes, definitely. If you’re deficient, you’ll notice how much better you feel when you start supplementing with those minerals.

What about the cause of the deficiency?

The cause of deficiency can be brought on by several factors such as diet, digestion, stress, IBS, inability to absorb nutrients, the state of your digestive function, the foods you’re eating and the soil in the country that you live in.

Does the time of day you take the supplement make a difference?

I tell my clients to take supplements first thing in the morning with breakfast. Some supplements contain minerals that help with energy production, so it’s great to boost that at the beginning of your day.

How does the quality and dosage of the supplements come into play?

Where you source your nutrients and minerals does matter.

What foods can inhibit supplement absorption?

It’s best to avoid taking supplements 30 minutes before or after coffee. Taking this product with food is important because taking zinc on an empty stomach can make people nauseous.

What foods can help supplement absorption?

It’s definitely important to take care of your gut as having healthy microbiome helps you absorb your minerals with ease.  It’s beneficial to take a daily probiotic, practice stress reduction and increase your intake of fibre, nuts, seeds, and greens, too. I also recommend reducing your intake of gluten, refined carbohydrates and refined sugar and ensuring your stomach is acidic enough by adding lemon or apple cider vinegar to water.

BlackBerry Patents New Camera Design, May Appear in A Priv Successor This Year

A patent for a new camera design has been granted to BlackBerry by the World Intellectual Patent Organization. The patent is titled “Electronic device and method of controlling same for capturing digital images,” and images provided show that it may be limited to devices with a slide mechanism.

The patent photos are of a phone that looks like the BlackBerry Priv with a slide out keyboard. Beneath the slide out keyboard is a front facing speaker.

BlackBerry Camera Patent

Unlike the Priv which has its rear camera on the back of the part that houses the keyboard, the diagram in the patent has the camera (504) on the display part. What appears to be another camera (520) is referred to as an auxiliary lens.

The patent description explains that the auxiliary lens “may be any suitable lens to provide further digital camera functionality”. It may be a wide-angle lens for capturing more area in a photo, a fish-eye lens, a zoom lens, or a macro lens. Just imagine the various lenses of a DSLR camera but on a much smaller scale. However, in this case, you will most likely be left with one type of lens.

BlackBerry Camera Patent

When you want to use the additional functionality of the auxiliary lens, you slide the phone down. For normal photos, you slide the device up. The hole labelled 522 is actually an optically clear cap to let the LED flash pass through when the phone is contracted. Since this is just like the Priv which has dual flash, the second hole serves the same function as 522.

Apart from the patent, TCL who is one of the current licensees of the BlackBerry brand also registered to trademark the name “Uni”. Last year, TCL trademarked the word “KEYone” before MWC and that became the name of the device which was initially referred to as BlackBerry Mercury.

UNI trademark

While one may think the new name may be related to an upcoming BlackBerry phone, the Trademark Electronic Search System reveals it is related to a VR device. If you also remember, the VR glasses that can be purchased with the Idol 5 is called the UNI360 VR Goggles.

BlackBerry Mobile is reported to have two phones scheduled for release this year. Both will have QWERTY keyboards but the design is not yet known. There is a possibility one may be the device shown in the patent above while the other will be a successor to the KEYone.

Apple Marketshare in Samsung’s Home Country at Record High: Strategy Analytics

Apple Marketshare in Samsung's Home Country at Record High: Strategy Analytics

Samsung smartphones maintained their dominant market status late last year as Apple iPhones expanded their presence in South Korea, an industry report said on Monday.

According to the report by industry tracker Strategy Analytics, the South Korean tech giant shipped 24 million units in the local market during the fourth quarter of 2017, reports Yonhap news agency.

The figure accounts for 46 percent of combined shipments that is nine percentage points down from the same period a year earlier, the report said.

Apple, meanwhile, sold 15 million units of its iPhones in the same quarter, with its market share reaching a record high 28.3 percent.

The figure for the iPhone is 3.3 percentage points up from the same period a year earlier, Strategy Analytics said.

Samsung has been moving to maintain its market share through budget models.

In the global market, Apple shipped 77.3 million smartphones worldwide in the October-December months, overtaking Samsung Electronics, a separate report said.

Apple captured first place with 19.3 percent global market share, nudging Samsung into second place, Strategy Analytics said.

The industry tracker said there was robust demand for the iPhone X, though global iPhone volumes have been on the decline on an annual basis for five of the past eight quarters.

Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ Get Low Repairability Score in iFixit Teardown

Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ Get Low Repairability Score in iFixit Teardown

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones are yet to be released by Samsung in many markets including India. However, DIY repair authority iFixit has brought a detailed teardown to reveal the internals of the South Korean giant’s latest flagship smartphones. While we already know that the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have faster processors, better cameras, AKG-tuned dual speakers for enhanced audio, and AR Emojis, among other features, the iFixit teardown assessment reveals many other features.

While there were no surprises found in the specifications department, not unusual as most Androidphones are released with detailed list of hardware components (unlike Apple devices), iFixit claimed that the internal design of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ “a welcome respite” from its recent destructive teardowns. The iFixit teardown of the two smartphones reveals that several of its components are modular and can be replaced independently. It also added that replacing the batteries is technically possible, but accessing it is an “unnecessary challenge”.

As far as the Galaxy S9 is concerned, the report says that the front and back glass in the smartphone leads to double the crackability. Additionally, the strong adhesive also makes it tough to access the internals in case of repairs. Also, due to the curved screen, replacing the front glass without destroying the display is extremely difficult.

When it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S9+, the iFixit teardown report says that the display and rear glass have increased the chance of breakage, which also makes repairs difficult to start. It added that in order to replace the screen, one needs to remove the glass rear panel and disassemble the entire handset while managing the tough adhesive. In conclusion, iFixit gave both the smartphones a repairability score of 4 out of 10.

iFixit also mentioned that the camera sensor arrangement in the Galaxy S9+ is “more sprawling and awkward looking” when compared to the Apple iPhone X. Adding to the optics features, the report said that the standard camera lenses use a minimum of five aperture blades to keep the aperture mostly circular throughout many f-stop adjustments. It said that the Galaxy’s aperture sports just two rotating, ring-like blades for its single adjustment.

Further, the report says, that despite the dual image sensors, the double camera on the handset is a “single unit, on a single PCB, with a single connector.” It added that the camera line appears to be called Star this time, compared to 2017’s Dream cameras. As for the relocated fingerprint sensor, iFixit says the sensor almost became a victim of the teardown as “it got ensnared in some nasty glue as we pried off the back cover.”

In terms of battery, the iFixit folks found that the 3.85 V, 3500mAh battery weighing in at 13.48Wh in the Galaxy S9+ was the same as the one found in the Galaxy S8+ and the Galaxy Note 7. Coming to biometrics, iFixit concluded that it may have been too ambitious of Samsung to “jump on Apple’s Animoji train without a hardware update to bring it up to speed.”

After every smartphone’s launch, several technology websites jump on the bandwagon of reviewing them but iFixit’s teardowns are quite popular. As the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will go on salein India on March 16, you now know what they pack on the inside just in time.

Intel Plays Down Report of Interest in Broadcom Acquisition

Intel Plays Down Report of Interest in Broadcom Acquisition

Microchip maker Intel Corp responded to a news report that it is considering a possible bid for Broadcom Ltd by saying that it is focused on integrating previous acquisitions, raising doubt over the idea.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Intel’s competitive concern about Broadcom’s attempt to buy mobile chip rival Qualcomm had led it to consider a range of acquisitions in response, including a bid for Broadcom.

In response to an inquiry about the Journal’s report, Intel said it does not comment on “rumours or speculation” related to mergers and acquisitions but that it is focused on its previous acquisitions.

“We have made important acquisitions over the past 30 months – including Mobileye and Altera – and our focus is on integrating those acquisitions and making them successful for our customers and shareholders,” Intel said in a statement to Reuters. Intel acquired autonomous vehicle technology firm Mobileye last year and acquired programmable chip maker Altera in late 2015.

Broadcom did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Shares of Broadcom rose 3.6 percent to $262.93 in after hours trade on Friday. Qualcomm and Intel each fell less than 1 percent, to $62.87 and $51.84, respectively.

Singapore-based Broadcom’s $117 billion bid for Qualcomm faces concerns by U.S. regulators worried about potential Chinese influence on the company and U.S. ability to influence the creation of the next generation of mobile networks, called 5G.

Qualcomm has sought assurances from Broadcom over potential antitrust issues.

Intel is mostly known for making chips that are the brains of personal computers and data centres, though it has made progress gaining smartphone manufacturing customers such as Apple.

If Broadcom buys Qualcomm, Intel would face a much bigger competitor, nearly equal to itself in market heft.

Broadcom and Qualcomm are worth close to $100 billion each and a combination would be the biggest tech deal ever. An Intel deal would be significantly bigger, since its market capitalization alone is nearly $240 billion.

The Journal reported that Intel had been considering a Broadcom bid since late last year and was working with advisers, although the newspaper said one of its sources described a bid as unlikely given the complexity of the combination.

Still, antitrust consultant Linley Gwennap said Intel likely could convince regulators to allow it to take over Broadcom, despite the size, since the companies largely make different types of microchips.

VLSI Research chief Dan Hutcheson agreed. “There’s product overlap, but it’s really inconsequential,” he said.

Ola, Uber Drivers Threaten Indefinite Strike in Key Indian Cities From Sunday

Ola, Uber Drivers Threaten Indefinite Strike in Key Indian Cities From Sunday

Drivers of cab aggregators Uber and Ola have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from the midnight of March 18.

The strike is expected to be observed in key cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune among other cities.

“Ola and Uber had given big assurances to the drivers, but today they are unable to cover their costs. They have invested Rs 5-7 lakh, and were expecting to make Rs 1.5 lakh a month but are unable to even make half of this, owing to the mismanagement by these companies,” Sanjay Naik of Maharashtra Navnirman Vahatuk Sena, who is organising the strike, told PTI today.

Naik further alleged that these taxi-hailing companies are giving first priority to company-owned cars rather than driver-owned vehicles, causing a slump in their business.

While taxi-hailing companies offered loan-guarantee letters to drivers through the Mudra scheme and that too without any verification, they are defaulting on repayment now as their costs are not covered, he claimed.

In Mumbai alone, there are over 45,000 cabs on these aggregators but due to the slump in business, there has been a fall of 20 percent in the number of cabs running on these platforms in the city.

“If our demands are not met, we will go on an indefinite strike,” he said, adding the drivers had approached MNS leader Raj Thackeray to intervene in the matter.

Other unions of Ola and Uber are also in support of the strike, Naik said.

“The transport department should take strict action as these taxi-hailing companies are violating permit conditions, and also encroaching on the taxi-rickshaw business. It is good they are going on strike,” Al Quadros, general secretary, Mumbai Taximen’s Union said.

While Ola declined to comment, an Uber spokesperson termed the strike call as a speculative.

New App Uses Crowdsourcing to Find You an EpiPen in an Emergency

iStock

Many people at risk for severe allergic reactions to things like peanuts and bee stings carry EpiPens. These tools inject the medication epinephrine into one’s bloodstream to control immune responses immediately. But exposure can turn into life-threatening situations in a flash: Without EpiPens, people could suffer anaphylactic shock in less than 15 minutes as they wait for an ambulance. Being without an EpiPen or other auto-injector can have deadly consequences.

EPIMADA, a new app created by researchers at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University, is designed to save the lives of people who go into anaphylactic shock when they don’t have EpiPens handy. The app uses the same type of algorithms that ride-hailing services use to match drivers and riders by location—in this case, EPIMADA matches people in distress with nearby strangers carrying EpiPens. David Schwartz, director of the university’s Social Intelligence Lab and one of the app’s co-creators, toldThe Jerusalem Post that the app currently has hundreds of users. Registered users are required to have an epinephrine prescription, and must apply (by emailing abigailk@mda.org.il) to join the community.

EPIMADA serves as a way to crowdsource medication from fellow patients who might be close by and able to help. While it may seem unlikely that people would rush to give up their own expensive life-saving tool for a stranger, EPIMADA co-creator Michal Gaziel Yablowitz, a doctoral student in the Social Intelligence Lab, explained in a press release that “preliminary research results show that allergy patients are highly motivated to give their personal EpiPen to patient-peers in immediate need.”

EpiPen is easy to use, so even though fellow allergy sufferers may not have medical training, it’s a relatively low-risk venture to ask them to treat a stranger the same way they’d treat themselves. The tool could be especially useful for children, who may be most likely to forget their EpiPens.

The app is currently available only in Israel, but the idea could be applicable across the world, for multiple life-threatening conditions. The researchers are collaborating on similar patient-to-patient apps elsewhere, including one in Philadelphia connecting people who carry the opioid overdose reversal medication naloxone.
